Samsung 980 Pro based on PCI Express 4.0 could be launched in August

Yesterday The new SSD Samsung 870 QVO 8TB was seen on Amazon, which will be based on next-generation QLC memories. Not only would Samsung be preparing consumer SSDs, it would also work on professional solutions. As has been disclosed, in August the Samsung 980 Pro based on the PCI Express 4.0 interface will be presented.

This new SSD drive from Samsung would arrive to offer a performance never seen before. The rumors that have appeared even point to making a fool of the PlayStation 5 SSD. And so far Sony has boasted a lot about the SSD, as if it were going to be the only novelty of the console. To date they have not talked about the AMD processor and graphics or Ray Tracing.

Interestingly, despite the fact that AMD does not tire of saying that they were the first to use PCI Express 4.0, manufacturers do not care much. The number of PCIe 4.0-based SSDs are very limited, mostly because they are absurdly expensive compared to PCIe 3.0 SSDs. To give us an idea, the Samsung 980 Pro will be the first from the company to be based on PCIe 4.0.

The Samsung 980 Pro is based on MLC NAND Flash memory and offers speeds of 250GB, 500GB and 1TB. This drive could offer 6500MB / s read speed and up to 5000MB / s write speed by Phison E16 controller. This controller, it should be noted, is not the best there are for the PCI Express 4.0 interface.

It is expected to be released in August, but there is no confirmed date or price. Regarding the price, the Samsung 970 Pro 512GB unit is around 190 euros, so the Samsung 980 Pro SSD could easily exceed 200 euros.
