Samsung to start mass production of DDR5 and LPDDR5 memories in 2021

The NAND Flash and DRAM memory market is one of the largest today, dominated by a handful of companies. Among these companies is Samsung, which was already a leader in the manufacture of memory for DDR3 and DDR4 modules. Now the company wants to lead the development of DDR5 and for this reason it has announced that in 20202 it will launch DDR5 and LPDDR5 memories.

During CES 2020, Micron already announced which was initiating testing of DDR5 memories from various partners. It was initially thought to be focused on the server segment, but Samsung's announcement changes things. LPDDR5 memories, for example, are destined for high-end smartphones. Some memoirs, which should be noted, which are based on the EUV lithography.

Samsung talks about DDR5 and LPDDR5 memories

The global situation is complicated due to the coronavirus, causing stoppages or significant reductions in production. For weeks there have been indicators that point to the rise in prices of DRAM memories (or what is the same DDR4 RAM) and NAND Flash (SSD). All due to stoppages in South Korea due to confinement in the face of the coronavirus, mainly.

Despite this, the South Korean company has indicated that it has sent 1 million DDR4 DRAM modules based on 10nm EUV lithography. A quite large figure, but that encompasses the segment of PC, smartphone and professional servers. There are three segments with great demand for products.

It should be noted that EUV technology should allow to improve production capacity by reducing manufacturing difficulty. Furthermore, going from 14nm to 10nm EUV results in an improvement in efficiency. The forecast is that they will start mass production of DDR5 and LPDDR5 memories in 2021.

Its implementation in the smartphone market would not be complicated, but for other segments it depends on third parties. In the case of servers and desktops, it depends on the integration of the DDR5 standard by Intel and AMD.
