Intel 665p is discontinued by the company for unknown reason

A few days ago, Intel began a drastic restructuring process at all levels. The company needs to make big changes in the face of the huge number of problems. They have restructured and segmented the production, development and manufacturing line of processors. Now the Intel 665p units codenamed Neptune Harbor Refresh have been moved to 'End of Life'. These SSD drives came to replace the 660p drives.

Although Intel has been trying to find a place in the storage units for some time, it is not quite successful. Their different efforts have ended up crashing, above all, due to the lack of visibility. Other manufacturers are already very established in the market and Intel launches SSD drives without making much noise.

Intel Discontinues 665p SSDs

According to the 'Product Change Notification' document, orders will continue to be received until January 31, 2021. The units will end their distribution on April 30, 2021. So these storage units have their days numbered.

The Intel 665p drives follow a fairly similar design to the 660p drives. Both units make use of the Silicon Motion SM2263 NVMe controller. The big change is in the memory type, using 3-layer QLC-type 96D NAND chips. We could say that the Intel 665p units were an upgrade, not new units.

This new unit implements performance and strength improvements over the predecessor model. The Intel 665p units had a big problem and that is the price, which was not competitive at all. The reasons are unknown, but there could be a conjunction between freeing up space to produce next-generation QLC memories and low sales.

Note that Intel would already have the 3-layer 144D NAND memories in QLC format ready. The new Keystone Harbor units would arrive later this year, although it has not been confirmed by the company.
