Kioxia PCIe 5.0 SSD reaches 14.000 MBps

Kioxia has unveiled at the China Flash Market Summit a next-generation PCIe 5.0 SSD that, in its words, will outperform even the best SSDs. The prototype comes from one of Kioxia's data center product lines; although Kioxia's PCIe 5.0 SSDs will offer home consumers a similar level of performance.

PCIe 5.0 is a highly anticipated upgrade to the PCIe standard, as it will deliver twice the performance of the current PCIe 4.0 interface. While PCIe 4.0 offers a data rate of up to 16 Gbps per link, PCIe 5.0 doubles that number to 32 Gbps, which will increase the possibilities of data transfer in PCIe devices such as SSDs or advanced network cards.

14.000 MBps SSD thanks to PCIE 5.0

Kioxia's PCIe 5.0 SSD will hit the market with sequential read and write speeds of up to 14.000 MBps and 7.000 MBps, respectively. For comparison, the brand's current CM6 PCIe 4.0 drive hits 6.900 MBps read and 4.200 MBps write. Upgrading to the PCIe 5.0 standard means a 103% increase in sequential read speeds and a 67% increase in writes.

The PCIe 5.0 SSD that Kioxia has shown has random performance increases between 50% and 79%. Response time has also vastly improved. Up to 77% reduction in read latency and 50% less write latency is estimated.

Since this PCIe 5.0 drive is targeted at data centers, it will arrive in both EDSFF E3 and U.2 2,5-inch formats. Kioxia plans to integrate an eight channel controller for data center units and a controller with up to 16 channels for the most demanding business models. They plan to offer PCIe 5.0 SSD models from 1.6TB to 30TB with endurance ratings spanning 1 to 3 DWPD, the indicator that indicates how many times the entire writes can be rewritten per day.
