Price of controllers for SSD will increase 20% in Q1 2021

During the last years we have seen how the price of SSD storage units have dropped in price. Increasing the number of layers has increased capacity while reducing prices. But in 2021 SSDs could go up due to a shortage of controllers for these drives.

The origin of the price increase would not be in the reports, it would be in the holding companies. It appears that the demand for SSD drives is higher than the manufacturing capacity of the controllers. As is usually normal, if demand increases and demand cannot be met, prices end up rising.

SSD controllers could make these storage drives more expensive

TrendForce indicates that NAND Flash IC controller vendors are having trouble meeting demand. Phison and Silicon Motion, the two leading manufacturers of SSD controllers, have been overwhelmed in demand. This in turn will cause a price hike on storage units.

The information indicates that the manufacturers of NAND Flash memories are already negotiating with the manufacturers of controllers. A price increase of 15-20% is estimated for the controlling companies.

Unfortunately we do not know what the cost of the controllers is and what the final impact will be. We simply have to be attentive to the evolution of SSD units in their different formats.

But why does the price of controllers really go up? Although there is no confirmation, it points to a large increase in eMMC memories, especially of 64GB capacity. A demand that comes from the market for smart TVs and Chromebook devices. They could even increase the prices of eMMC memories during the first quarter of 2021.

Everything indicates that by 2021 buying electronic products will be much more expensive. AMD and NVIDIA, for example, have GPU, semiconductor and memory supply issues. But AMD's problem is more serious, as it also suffers from a shortage of Ryzen 5000 processors due to TSMC being unable to meet the huge demand.
