Threadripper 3960X and Threadripper 3970X officially announced by AMD. No backward compatibility
Officially introduced the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and Threadripper 3970X processors, which will require a new motherboard.
On July 7, AMD's Ryzen 3000 processors arrived. These processors are based on the Zen2 @ 7nm architecture, which will be the base of the Threadripper 3000. The company just announced the Threadripper 3960X and Threadripper 3970X processors. They will be some of the processors that will make up this new family of processors for Workstation. Processors that are postulated as a better alternative in terms of performance and price than Intel processors.
We have on the one hand the Threadripper 3960X, which will have 24 cores and 48 threads. Above will be the Threadripper 3970X, which will feature 32 cores and 64 threads. Something curious is that these processors do not have compatibility with the motherboards for the Threadripper 2000.

Let's start with the specifications of the Threadripper 3960X. As we said, this processor has 24 cores and 48 processing threads. It will work at a base frequency of 3.8GHz and will arrive in Boost mode at 4.5GHz. This processor has a 3MB L128 cache memory and supports DDR4-3200 Quad Channel RAM with a TDP of 280W. It will hit the market for $1399.
Next we have the Threadripper 3970X with 32 cores and 64 threads. The base frequency of this processor is 3.7GHz and in Boost mode it will reach 4.5GHz. This processor has a 3MB L128 cache memory and supports DDR4-3200 Quad Channel RAM with a TDP of 280W. It will hit the market for $ 1999.
The two processors include 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes of which 8 are reserved for communication with the chipset. These Threadripper 3000 processors will not be compatible with current motherboards, a new socket and the new TRX40 chipset are needed. It is because communication changes have been implemented between processor and chipset to "adjust scalability." The new socket is quite similar in design with 4 pins, with cooling being compatible.
The new TRX40 chipset supports 8 PCIe lanes for storage, up to 8 SATA ports, up to 8 USB 3.1 ports, and up to 4 USB 2.0 ports. In addition, the TRX40 chipset will support four graphics configurations in x16 / x8 / x16 / x8 configuration.
Both processors will hit the market on November 25.
