3990-core Threadripper 64X has been unveiled by AMD at CES 2020
We arrived at the highlight of the AMD presentation at CES 2020: the Ryzen Threadripper 3990X. This processor craze is the first for workstations, streamers and designers to implement 64 cores. Logically this processor is based on the Zen2 @ 7nm architecture and is a processor monster. Even AMD has needed the three screens that Lisa Su had behind her to display the statistics.
The company has left the big bombshell of the event for last (and us in our coverage). The image of the power of this processor in Cinebench R20 speaks for itself, really. We apologize if the power data is not visible, but the holding of the conference has been regrettable.

This Threadripper 3990X processor has 64 cores and 128 threads, capable of handling anything. A processor that works at a base frequency of 2.9GHz and that can reach 4.3GHz in Boost mode. It comes with 288MB of cache and has a TDP of 280W, although AMD has not specified it. It will hit the market on February 7 for $ 3.990.
Returning to the graph (which looks terrible, I repeat the apologies, but thanks that I have been able to hunt it), we see that this Threadripper 3990X processor is crazy. The image shows us the Threadripper 3970X (32 cores), the Threadripper 3960X (24 cores) and the Ryzen 9 3950X (16 cores). The small gray bar below refers to the Intel Core i9-9900K.
Finally AMD has compared it to a system based on two Xeon Platinum 8280s that add between the two 56 cores and 112 threads. Each Xeon Platinum 8280 has only 28 cores and 56 threads and is the Intel processor with the most cores on the market. These two processors mark 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete the V-Ray Render. The Threadripper 3990X does this in 1 hour and 3 minutes, which is 30% less time.
Note that only the two Xeon Platinum 8280s cost about $ 20.000, while the Threadripper 3990X costs $ 3990. With a fifth of the price we get much better performance. Clearly Intel has a major problem on its hands.
