Threadripper 3990X hits 5.5GHz with a good dose of liquid nitrogen

After announcing itself at CES 2020, AMD recently released the Threadripper 3990X processor. This processor monstrosity looks like not working correctly in some versions of Windows 10 due to the amount of threads. A minor fact, which does not tarnish the quality of this processor. A processor that in addition to being a beast, in itself, can also reach 5.5GHz.

The professional overclocker TSAIK has managed to bring this processor to 5548MHz, setting a record. Achieving this has not been easy and has required quite a bit of liquid nitrogen. Note that Zen architecture processors are complex when it comes to overclocking due to the voltage at which they operate and even more so in a 64-core processor.

They take the Threadripper 3990X up to 5.5GHz

Threadripper 3990X has 64 cores and 128 threads working at a base frequency of 2.9GHz and can go in Boost mode up to 4.3GHz. This processor offers 32MB of L2 cache and 256GB of L3 cache. It also has support for the PCIe 4.0 interface and for DDR4 @ 3200MHz memory.

This feat has been achieved, as we said, with enough liquid nitrogen and an MSI Creator TRX40 motherboard. In addition, DDR4 @ 1866MHz RAM memories have been installed with CL13-13-13-31 latencies.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X

This Threadripper 3990X processor running at 5475MHz has scored a total of 39.158 points in Cinebench R20, which is a world record. The Intel Core i9-10980XE clocked at 4.8GHz is barely capable of 11.000 points. Logically the difference in cores has a lot to do with the difference in performance.

Safedisk, another overclocker, has taken its Threadripper 3990X up to 5.223MHz with the processor running at 1.68V. This processor is accompanied by DDR4 @ 3800MHz memories with CL12-11-11-22-54 latencies. It has managed to score 18.832 points in Cinebench R15 and in wPrime 1024M it has scored 12,71 seconds.
