TSMC announces 5nm lithography, which will be 15% more powerful than 7nm
TSMC announces that they have already started manufacturing chips based on 5nm, a lithography that will be 15% more powerful than 7nm.
We don't have 7nm-based chips on the market yet, but the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) would already have 5nm ready. The company has indicated that they have started manufacturing processors under the 5nm lithography, but they are far from ready for the general market. NVIDIA, AMD, Qualcomm and Apple are the main companies that will have access to this new lithograph. This forces Intel to accelerate, although the 10nm has caused problems, the company has indicated that the 7nm is marching at a better pace than expected.
TSMC would already have the 5nm lithography ready
The foundry has indicated that the 5nm lithography is now ready to start producing chips. There is still a long way to go before this lithograph is well polished and can be used for solutions for general consumption. According to the Taiwanese foundry, the density is increased by 80% and it will offer up to 15% more performance per chip, compared to 7nm. This according to data from a test conducted by the company based on an ARM Cortex-A72 core.
There is still enough for this process to be optimal to be able to offer processors and consumer graphics. Initially it will be used to make chips for IoT and chips for 5G. The first processors are expected, at the earliest, to be unveiled during the second half of 2020.
TSMC has also indicated that the 7nm manufacturing process is a resounding success. They also indicate that they have been overwhelmed by the number of requests from their main clients. Logically we are talking about AMD, NVIDIA, Apple, Xilinx and others. As the function has indicated, much of the production is focused on making smartphone chips.
From the Taiwanese foundry they emphasize that everything they are capable of producing in 7nm is being sold. During the second half of the year, they are expected to start supplying chips based on 7nm EUV, which should improve the efficiency of the process and increase the amount of production.
