TSMC makes it official that in 2020 they will begin the production of commercial processors under 5nm

It is officially announced by TSMC that in 2020 they will begin to produce commercial processors based on 5nm.

The most important foundry today is the Taiwanese TSMC. This foundry is in its prime, especially following GlobalFoundries' withdrawal from the nanometer race. This foundry has placed itself at the forefront of chip manufacturing. The foundry has categorically stated that In 2020 it will already have the capacity to manufacture processors based on 5nm lithography.

Currently TSMC has a demand 7nm higher than its production capacity. AMD Ryzen 3000 and AMD RX 5700 processors sell very well. The EPYC Rome processors seem to have been very well received. But it is also that Apple also demands 7nm processors for its new iPhone. All this causes the foundry to be saturated.

TSMC could produce 5nm processors by 2020

To achieve this, the company has planned a significant investment of about $ 15 billion, according to information. The goal is to start producing processors in 000nm in 2020. If it goes according to plan, the frequency of these processors will be more powerful and support better frequencies than 5nm.

The company confirms this strong investment to be able to produce 5nm processors commercially. By 2023 the company wants to have the capacity to produce processors based on os 3nm. This would be the second part of the company's ambitious roadmap. For now, the Taiwanese foundry wants to focus on 5nm.

These ambitious plans for TSMC are complex, but it wants to continue to be the leading company in the silicon smelting market. Although at the moment we do not know if TSMC has clients that demand 5nm processors. AMD at the moment in 2020 plans to launch processors under the 7nm + lithography and the 5nm appear in 2021 by the company.
