TSMC studies building a chip manufacturing plant in Europe

The chip shortage is affecting everyone, even the auto industry. This segment is also having trouble receiving orders to build new vehicles. Although the big news usually talks about graphics cards and processors for gaming, the shortage of chips is general. The automotive industry is noticing this strongly and it is a huge disservice to them. To the point that several vehicle manufacturers have demanded more wafers from TSMC.

The Taiwanese foundry highlights that "the demand for manufacturing [in Europe] of cutting-edge chips is promising."

We have to take into account that companies such as Citroën, Seat, Opel, Renault, Nissan, Mercedes, Toyota, Audio and others have their production plants in Europe. Given such a large number of customers in Europe, it seems logical to create a production plant close to these customers (and others)

Some time ago the European Union revealed the intention to build an advanced semiconductor factory in Europe. The plan is to stop depending so much on the United States and Asia, which is where the smelters are concentrated.

The plans of the European Union are to establish a smelter capable of operating at nodes of 10nm or less. Also, the foundry should be able to reach the 2nm node. TSMC is positioned as the most viable option to achieve these objectives.

This plant will provide TSMC customers in Europe with faster chip arrivals and lower costs. There will also be benefits for TSMC, as ASML, who makes the machinery to make the chips, is based in the Netherlands. Also, the European Union is quite likely to offer some kind of help to facilitate adoption.
