TSMC has become the world's leading semiconductor foundry, ahead of Intel
During the New Horizon conferences, it was highlighted that the Taiwanese TSMC has surpassed Intel in the semiconductor industry.
Intel's situation in the market is complicated to say the least, especially because the demand for processors has exceeded the company's production capacity. During the Future Horizon conference, which focuses on semiconductors, their present and their future. Among the talking points is the shift to chip production. Taiwanese TSMC has been at the forefront in the semiconductor industry, surpassing Intel.
TSMC outpaces Intel in semiconductor production
The point is that TSMC has managed to get ahead of Intel, thanks to the 7nm lithography. This has put a lot of stress on Intel, which has lost a position that it seemed impossible to lose: a leader in semiconductor manufacturing. The victory was only possible because of Intel's problems with 10nm. These issues have caused Intel to rely heavily on 14nm.
Notably, TSMC expects to have the 5nm lithography by 2020. Even if Intel jumped to 10nm at the end of the year, it would still be outpaced by TSMC. Something that could be testimonial because on several occasions Intel has said that its 7nm lithography is very advanced. We must also specify that the 10nm of Intel is equivalent to the 7nm of TSMC and this is so because of the type of lithography design.
Malcolm Penn, Chief Analyst at Future Horizon, stressed that the Taiwanese company has done a great job and that it has dominated the semiconductor industry for quite some time. He has stressed that this should make Bob Swan, Intel's recently appointed CEO, unable to sleep easy. In addition, Penn has said that Swan resembles Andy Grove, who was CEO of Intel between 1987 and 1998, which were golden years for the company.
