The South Korean company started mass production of GDDR6 GPU memory that offers twice the speed.
Yesterday Samsung announced the start of the production of 6Gb GDDR16 memories built in 10 nanometers, thanks to the density of this memory it not only doubles the processing speed with respect to GDDR5, but also works with about 13 percent less energy (1.35V) than its predecessor of 20 nanometers (1.55V) and works at a pin speed of 18Gbps and data transfer of 72Gbps.
In its statement Samsung Electronics through Jinman Han, vice president of memory product planning and applications engineering said:
By introducing next-generation GDDR6 products, we will strengthen our presence in the video game and video card markets and accommodate the growing need for advanced graphics memory in automotive and networking.
It is a bit obvious to note that with the arrival of this new generation of memories, areas such as video games, graphics processing, virtual reality or artificial intelligence (and also mining for the pain of many) will take an important leap in many aspects.
Samsung announcement from CES last year, the development of GDDR6 memories and the start of production at the beginning of this year, which can be seen, have been able to comply with their schedule, however, despite the fact that their production is already underway in a massive way, the company has not said when they plan to commercialize them but it is very likely that their customers are already developing their new products with these memories.
Although from the middle of 2017 we knew that SK Hynix had its 6GB GDDR8, Samsung managed to surpass them by producing its own 16Gb and most likely we will see these memories in Nvidia's Volta GPUs, but this is still speculation until Nvidia does not pronounce on the matter with the new GDDR6 memories.
