Absolutely nothing has been known about Google Glass for months, but there are other solutions currently being developed similar to these augmented reality glasses. One of the bets is Intel Vaunt, which internally are known as Superlight. These were announced last February and have only lasted two months in development, since this project would have been canceled. Apparently, Intel would be sheltering the division of portable devices, thus ending the development of these glasses.
It is not a rumor, since it has been confirmed by Intel through an official statement, where it is hinted that there is a lack of investment, due to a 'market dynamics', which would be the key to closing this project. Bloomberg reported a few months ago that Intel was trying to sell the majority stake in that division, which had 200 workers and was valued at $ 350 million.
Intel is continually working on new technologies and experiences. Not all of those that are developed end up becoming a product that we choose to bring to market. The Superlight project is a great example where Intel developed truly differentiated augmented reality glasses for the consumer.
We will take a disciplined approach as we continue to invent and explore new technologies, which will sometimes require tough decisions when market dynamics do not support new investments.
The idea of Intel, to avoid being uncomfortable with Google Glass, Vaunt was developed with a laser-retina projector. This low-power projector had the ability to transmit a red, monochrome, 400 × 150-pixel image into the upper right corner of our field of view, thus suppressing the protruding glass screen.
