The new Intel Gemini Lake SoCs have significant improvements over the Apollo Lake, improving power and efficiency, as well as integrating different technology improvements.
Everything indicates that Intel would be finalizing the launch of a new line of processors. No, we are not talking about Basins Failures or Coffee Lake and we are not talking about Cannon Lake, but about the Gemini Lake, SoC-type processors, which are below the Celeron and the Pentium ones and will come to replace the current SoCs based on Apollo Lake. These have been manufactured based on the 14nm process and these processors have a TDP of only 6W for mobile devices and a TDP of 10W for SFF desktops.
These new Gemini Lake are characterized by having a much better performance per watt than their predecessors, which is very interesting, since the performance improves, logically. The Gemini Lake will integrate two cores or four cores, depending on, based on Intel's Goldmont Plus micro-architecture. Each of these Goldmont Plus cores does not differ on a physical level from the current Goldmont ones, but the cache memory is doubled, going from the current 2MB L3 to 4MB L3 and improvements are implemented to reduce the heat generated, which allows to increase the working frequencies.
In addition, Gemini Lake incorporates a new controller for single channel DDR4 RAM that supports RAM frequencies much higher than the current one and should also increase the amount of RAM supported, which should double, since in Apollo Lake it is limited to the 8GB. This processor has a built-in WLAN controller that offers support for 802.11b / g / n and Bluetooth 4.0. On the GPU integrated in the Gemini Lake, it is based on the architecture of the Intel Gen9 and will have 18 execution units, which will allow connecting two high-definition screens, supporting up to two HDMI 2.0 outputs. The first teams with these SoCs should arrive by the last quarter of this year.
