The Intel i7 7800X does not beat the Intel i7 7700K in games, but it does in energy efficiency per core

Intel's new processors are being the center of analysis and comparisons, not only with the AMD Ryzen and the upcoming AMD Ryzen Threadripper, but also with Intel's own processors. Techspot has made a comparison between the Intel Core i7 7700K processors of the Kaby Lake family with the Intel Core i7 7800X of the Kaby Lake-X family. The two processors, despite being sister architectures, the Basins Falls have a different design and are developed to be powerful, especially in heavy computing tasks, not for gaming, although the comparison is about that.

The i7 7700K has four cores and eight processing threads, with a base frequency of 4.2GHz and a Boost mode of 4.5GHz, with a total TDP of 91W, while the i7 7800X has six cores and twelve processing threads, with a base frequency of 3.5GHz and a Boost mode of 4GHz, with a TDP of 140. The thing is that current games do not usually take advantage of more than four cores, there are very few that support more than four, that is why it is so uninteresting to buy a Ryzen 7 for gaming or an Intel Basins Falls, especially the latter, which are designed for programmers, photo editors, 3D designers and similar tasks, where the power of the processor is key.

Regarding consumption, at Techspot they have measured that the i7 7700K in idle consumption 62W, along with the rest of the hardware and at full load consumption 363W. If we look at what they have measured in the i7 7800X, in idle it gives 84W and in load it gives 384W. If we calculate the consumption in idle with respect to the number of cores, the i7 7700K consumes 15.5W per core, while the i7 7800X consumes 14W per core, while in load we are talking about 90.75W per core and the i7 7800X is 64W, with which there is a significant improvement in energy efficiency

Now let's see how the i7 7700K behaves with a little overclocking, specifically at a frequency of 4.9GHz, where we see that 3W more consumption reaching 65W than total consumption in idlya full load rises to 395W, which is 32W more than consumption. The i7 7800X raised its frequency to 4.7GHz, we see that it consumes 88W, which is a rise of only 4W, while the consumption at full load is 446W, which represents a rise of 62W. The difference between one consumption and the other is minimal and we see that the i7 7800X is more efficient per core.

If we look at the performance in games, the i7 7800X and the i7 7700K have been benchmarked and the difference in many cases is minimal and in others it even performs less, something logical, since there are few games that take advantage of more than four cores The most interesting thing, for us, is the aspect of consumption and its efficiency, where we see that the consumption of this processor from the Basins Falls family is much better compared to the Kaby Lake. It should be noted that we are facing a processor intended for the professional sector and in no case, is it designed for gaming.
