Intel displays PCIe 5.0 with speeds of 28,3 GB / s

Ryan Shrout, Intel's Head of Performance Strategy, has been encouraging early adoption of the PCIe 5.0 form factor. In a recent tweet, he showcased Samsung's new PM1743 SSDs paired with Intel's Core Alder Lake series processors, the first to support PCIe 5.0.

The test result showed that with a single PM1743 SSD, Intel was able to achieve data rates of more than 13 GB / s, and with two drives, data rates of more than 28 GB / s were able to be achieved in IOmeter. . In comparison, a current SSD with PCIe 4.0 reaches speeds of 7 GB / s, almost doubling the speed with a single drive.

Intel boasts of speed to move to PCIe 5.0

Intel is the only CPU manufacturer that supports PCIe 5.0 in its hardware, while AMD has yet to release CPUs that support it. Although for now the hardware compatible with PCIe 5.0 is scarce since it also requires a compatible motherboard, as we have seen of Alder Lake compatible cards compatible with PCIe Gen 4.0 but not 5.0.

This PCIe Gen 5.0 speed test, using SSDs designed for massive cloud storage, aims to showcase their capabilities for the growing demand of cloud services and the upcoming arrival of metaverses . PCIe 5.0 storage is expected to be available in the second half of 2022, meaning there should be a point where PCIe 5.0 storage is available even though AMD no longer offers support for the standard with its mainstream desktop products. That said, most home consumer workloads don't require such high data speeds, as work suites and gaming are not affected by a potential bottleneck caused by PCIe 4.0.
