They manage to move Doom on the touch screen of the Lidl kitchen robot

The supermarket Lidl, of German origin, a few days ago put the Monsieur Cuisine Connect on sale. We are talking about a kitchen robot that has been in high demand and that has a much lower price than the Thermomix. This 'white label' kitchen robot hides some secrets, such as a speaker and a microphone, the latter disabled. Something very interesting is that the front touch panel is based on Android 6. Well, two French users have managed to hack it and run Doom.

Lidl has been able to sell a large number of these kitchen machines due to their low price. To give us an idea, the Lidl website in Spain, after being put up for sale, had some problems due to increased traffic. In 2016, Silvercrest (the brand under which this kitchen robot is marketed) already put a simpler one on sale, without a touch screen. This new one has more advanced hardware and a touch screen, very useful
Two young junk fans wanted to see what this kitchen robot is capable of. Silvercrest and Lidl surely did not expect that the Doom game could be played on the touch screen. For those interested there is a thread on Reddit where they explain how to run the game in one of these kitchen robots.
As they fiddled around, they realized that the Lidl kitchen robot screen was based on Android 6. After discovering it, they worked on accessing the operating system's user interface. They achieved this through a German user development, which allows you to use the screen as if it were a tablet.
They have published several videos on YouTube, as well as a thread on Reddit, where they explain how to make more use of this robot. Among other things, they have managed to make Discord's voice function work without problems.
A hidden microphone, a great vulnerability
This kitchen robot helps us in different steps of the recipe and has different prompts or voice advice. Logically, for this you need a speaker, but not a microphone, which is also installed. Something that surprised the boys when they opened the food processor to inspect it inside.
Although the microphone is deactivated, it is quite rare that it is present. Inside they found a 'simple' tablet that acts as a touch screen for recipes. The interesting thing is that the microphone is dedicated, it is not the one of the tablet.
It is not the only problem with the tablet and it is that the Android 6 operating system has not received updates since October 2017. Clearly the tablet of the Lidl kitchen robot is exposed to vulnerabilities and the microphone could be used to spy on us. A problem that it seems that the creators of this little machine have not taken into account.
Michel Biero, Executive Marketing Director of Lidl France, points out that: “The device was planned to be controlled by voice and eventually via Alexa. We left the microphone, but it is completely inactive and it is impossible to activate it remotely.”
