Experts claim that many users don't need a VPN
VPNs are on the lips of many Internet users today who feel that more internet security is necessary by hiding their identity. Although many users actually use a VPN to mostly watch content on Netflix and other services that are not available in their country.
One study found that VPN use quadrupled between 2016 and 2018 as consumers scrambled to protect data in the wake of scandals, breaches, and attacks. It is also possible that they have increased due to the publicity that is given by Youtubers. But many users don't need a VPN.
There is still some misinformation about VPNs
Many consumers are flocking to VPNs with the misconception that they will protect them from potential privacy breaches on the internet. Experts claim that it is wrong and even many VPN providers are even less ethical than companies or ISPs.
Several years ago some VPN providers were found to be unreliable or to track user data when they claimed they weren't. Cybersecurity professionals have changed their mind into recommending even the use of one. While people who require strict security over wireless technology can still benefit from using a reliable VPN provider, experts say the landscape has changed because improvements in the general security of ordinary browsing coupled with the possible risk of choosing a scam VPN makes it even safer to be without a VPN.
Bob Lord, former director of security for the Democratic National Committee, told the Motherboard portal that most people don't need personal VPNs nowadays because the Internet is much more secure than ten years ago. According to Lord, personal VPNs create additional risks and giving all advice that would only benefit some people diverts them from the steps that will actually help them protect their digital lives. I claim that some VPNs could help block malicious ads due to the online advertising ecosystem.
But with more and more VPN services out there, it's hard to know which ones are legitimate and which ones are a cover for collecting, storing, and monetizing data. It does not mean that VPNs are useless, as they are still used by many professionals for their work and to maintain their anonymity, but that many home users can put themselves in more privacy problems than simply surfing the internet without a VPN.
