Cyberattacks on companies have increased significantly in recent years. Many groups of hackers are trying to break into companies to extort ransom. Foxconn, Apple's largest supplier, suffered a major ransomware attack. Specifically, its Mexican division experienced a significant attack on its communications infrastructure. The company also reported that it has restored its internet connection.
A statement from the company to the Taiwan Stock Exchange indicated that it has made an update on the level of security at the compromised facilities. They have also highlighted that ransomware has a fairly limited impact on Foxconn's operations.
Foxconn reportedly suffered a ransomware attack on its Mexican facilities
The attack occurred at the Foxconn facilities in Mexico through a ransomware-type attack. This attack would have occurred during the Thanksgiving weekend. The attackers who injected the ransomware reportedly requested around $34 million, which had to be paid in bitcoins.
Files have been stolen from Foxconn NA and posted on DoppelPaymer. The files that have been leaked by this ransomware attack are generic business documents and reports. It appears that they have not gained access to intellectual property, financial information or employee details.
It appears that Foxconn has suffered specifically about 100GB of unfiled files from its 1.200 internal servers. In addition, 20-30TB of information belonging to backup copies would have been removed.
So the impact could be indicated as a minimum for the company. The biggest problem has been the time to return the state of the facilities to normal. The stolen data appears to be irrelevant. Regarding backups, they may have redundant backups.
