Hacker accesses a Ring camera and tells a girl that he is Santa Claus

The security of devices connected to the internet is usually having a weak security. The Washington Post and the local string WMC5 they are echoing an event that happened to a family in Tennessee. This family says that a hacker has managed to access the security camera Ring installed in her young daughter's room. In addition, the hacker would have told the girl that he was Santa Claus and his best friend.

Ashley LeMay, mother of the family, has said that during Black Friday she acquired two Ring cameras. The mother wanted to ensure the safety of her home and her daughter, being able to see if something happened to the girl at any given time.

Major scare with a Ring camera

As LeMay has said, when 'Tiptoe Throught The Tulips' started playing in the little girl's room. This theme is a song widely used in horror movies. The girl came into the room to see what was happening.

When the girl entered her room, the song stopped playing and the voice of a mysterious man began to be heard speaking to her. The male voice told him that it was his best friend, but that it was actually Santa Claus. After this he told the girl that she could do whatever she wanted: dirty her room, smash the television, or say racial slurs.

The girl is confused and after a while she tells her "I don't know who you are." Quickly the minor leaves the room running in search of her father to indicate that something strange was happening in her room. The father quickly walks in and disconnects the camera.

They have indicated that the installed Ring camera has night vision, HD video transmission and even microphone and speaker to interact. Whoever accessed the camera, as indicated, could not only interact with the girl, but also observe in real time.

Incorrect configuration?

They have also spoken with the girl's mother, who has confirmed that when I set up the camera, she did not enable two-step verification. Nor has he been able to say if they changed the default access credentials. There are two actions to be taken for this type of device when it comes to avoiding intrusions and improving security.

This is also not the first case of unauthorized access to a security camera. We can find on the net a large number of forums where addresses and passwords for accessing cameras from all over the world are shared.

What scares us so much is that this person didn't care that she was a little girl. Whoever it was, it didn't stop until we unplugged the cameras. It did not stop. Now the girls are afraid to sleep in their room. For the past few days, they have been camped out in the living room. This is our house. It is very sad not to feel safe

Says Mrs. LeMay

Although we are still investigating this matter and are taking appropriate steps to protect our devices based on our investigation, we can confirm that this incident is not related in any way to a breach or compromise of Ring security.
