Google Photos no longer offers unlimited storage for iPhones

Google removes unlimited photo storage from iPhones. The Google Photos service offered it to the Pixel 3 but not to the Pixel 4, which caused considerable confusion to consumers.

Until recently, a recent legal hole currently offers iPhones unlimited free Google Photos storage. At the same time, the Pixel 4 was left without the same option, which is rare because it is from Google itself.

Google has now confirmed that this was indeed a bug and that they are aware of and working to fix it. What does this mean? That in the end everyone loses unlimited storage.

Initially spotted on the Apple subreddit, the unlimited storage of Google Photos is highly dependent on the HEIC format used by the app from iPhone camera. This ultra-compressed file format is actually smaller than the JPG files used by Google Photos to the point that photos don't count towards your storage quota.

No more unlimited photo storage

This loophole currently allows iPhone owners to have unlimited Google Photos storage. At the same time Pixel owners have been stripped of this ability option with the launch of Pixel 4.

It's also worth noting that if you have a Pixel 3 or Pixel 4, there is currently no option to save photos in HEIC / HEIF format. Even though Android 10 supports such a feature. HEVC is available for saving videos, but the video format counts for Google Photos storage allocation.

We don't know if Google will convert photos already stored in Photos from HEIC / HEIF to JPG and then essentially count towards storage if people have already taken advantage. It is also unclear if the solution will target all devices that can use the file format.

Google has already blocked unsupported video file formats from Google Photos to prevent abuse of the free storage platform, so technically this is nothing new. That being said, it's still disappointing that this was even a problem to begin with.
