These carry a large amount of electronics and among other things, they open by proximity. Well, a security camera would have recorded an alleged theft of a Tesla. The video was recorded by the Ring smart doorbell.

The video shows two men, one who will have the car with what seems to be a cable that acts as an antenna. The second gets into the vehicle and starts it. This has happened in Borehamwood, quite close to London. Apparently what the cable man does is act as a repeater antenna for the signal from the key.

Tesla cars detect the owner's key as he approaches. When the car detects the proximity of the key, whether we carry it in our hand, pocket or bag, it is unlocked. This allows you to drive it without major problems.

To steal it they have used a cable that acts as an antenna and a transceiver that relays the signal. It basically copies the signal from the original key and transmits it to the car. It is not something that is rare, in fact, this type of theft is called a signal amplification relay attack.

Although it is news because it has been in a Tesla, like accidents, it is not something unique to these cars. Any vehicle that has a proximity key opening is susceptible to this type of attack.

It should be noted that attackers should have more data to achieve this. Tesla vehicles have a 'PIN to Drive' to be able to turn it on. They also have cryptographic verification and sentinel mode, making theft difficult. From the looks of it, the attackers had at least obtained the PIN
