Venezuela blocks the Tor network, cutting freedom of expression even further

New blow to the freedom of users in Venezuela, where they have blocked the Tor network, preventing Venezuelans from speaking freely.

The situation in Venezuela is very worrying and hopefully it will be solved one day, but it has no signs, at least for the moment, rather the opposite. The latest censorship and control action by the government has been to block the Tor network, preventing users from connecting to this network. It is expected that in the coming months web pages will continue to be blocked in the country, either directly or through IP address blocking and VPN blocking.

Venezuela continues to restrict internet access and blocks Tor.

Many users in Venezuela have started to use Tor due to the blocking of web pages by the government, with a significant growth in activity in recent months. This has not pleased the government and they have blocked Tor. This blockade is stronger, since these new restrictions cannot be bypassed using DNS, since Venezuela has become serious in blocking and prevents the use of these DNS from Google or CloudFlare.

"This is the latest movement in the Internet censorship efforts in Venezuela, as it blocks the highest profile sites with more sophisticated methods," said Andrés Azpúrua of Venezuela Inteligente, in a statement provided through Access News. "This is one of his boldest censorship actions on the Internet."

What the Tor network does is direct traffic through a dense network of repeaters, preventing the detection by governments of the content that users access.

Last April, senior United Nations officials already condemned the manipulation and censorship of the Venezuelan government regarding the restrictions and torture to which opposition politicians and journalists are subjected.

The official account of this service has already said that users who want to bypass government censorship can do so by activating the 'meek-azure' option, which will allow them to bypass the blockade. This option is valid for Venezuelan and Chinese users.
