Future PS4 games will have to be playable on PS5

If a developer still wants to release a game on PS4, they need to make sure it works on PS5. No extra extra features.

Sony has ordered that from July 13 onwards, all games that will be certified by Sony to be released on PlayStation 4 must be compatible with its future console, the PlayStation 5. This comes from internal documents seen by the Eurogamer portal.

Backward compatibility imposed for late games

Sony documents go further and say that compatibility means that games will have to run smoothly on PlayStation 5, and those that are sent in for certification before July 13 will be encouraged by developers to make them compatible.

By giving advance notice before going to certification, Sony hopes to give developers a little time to adapt their games to work out of the box on the new hardware. They thus hope that the library of games compatible with PlayStation 5 will be expanded and ask that all modes have to be playable on both consoles, so there can be no exclusive game features for PlayStation 5.

It is likely that some of those games that will be released on two generations of consoles will be confirmed next June 4 when Sony holds the PlayStation 5 presentation event. There are some rumors that one of the games that will be shown could be Horizon Zero Dawn 2, since a few days ago the official Twitter account for the game retweeted the announcement of the program with some cheeky faces but it may simply be that the Community Manager of the account wants Horizon fans to see the event even if later they have nothing to see.

This date means that The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima do not have to be compatible with PlayStation 5. But to be honest, that those games come out at the end of the useful life of PlayStation 4 and are not compatible with its successor would be something that Sony would not let that happen, especially when The Last of Us II expects to have a certain multiplayer component starting next year.
