Khronos Group develops a standard API for VR

Khronos Group develops an API to program on multiple virtual reality platforms faster and easier.

OpenGL, WebGL and recently Vulkan, have received an important update in recent times within what are open source APIs and seeing the great success, Khronos Group has decided to work on a standard that is compatible between brands, without this having an impact on the payment of royalties and that it is totally free. This has been developed for virtual reality, which is currently divided very clearly and it is very complex to develop for several of these platforms at the same time, almost impossible.

Khronos Group has created an interesting API that can interface with all hardware APIs and eliminate the extra work involved in developing and exporting between platforms. It is similar to the implementation of a high-level API, which generates a common programming platform between the different developers, without taking into account the technology provider and the specific elements, which generates great simplicity for developers.

The complication of the current system is based on the fact that they had to develop for three different preforms, such as SteamVR (OpenVR), Oculus (OVR) or OSVR, with different game engines and hardware characteristics, well, now the developers with this API, They will only develop for one system and scale between them, all done basically by the API itself.

This undoubtedly represents an important boost for VR, since developing under an API that allows scaling to multiple platforms saves work and money. There are big brands that are already working with Khronos, such as Oculus, Valve, Google, AMD, NVIDIA, ARM or Intel, as more prominent, but they also work with other brands in the sector. It highlights that there are no smartphone platforms involved in this development and the absence of Qualcomm, which is the most important chip developer in the world of smartphones.
