The AMD Navi will have a special circuit for Artificial Intelligence

AMD is already working on the new AMD Navi architecture, which must have specific hardware for Artificial Intelligence, something that has not been possible in the AMD Vega because its development is very advanced.

Although the RX Vega for AMD gaming has not reached the market, AMD does not have time to wait for the official launch of the same and is already developing the next architecture that should arrive next year. AMD is already developing the AMD Navi, the GPUs that should reach the market in the middle of next year 2018 and that, as we know, will be manufactured under the 7nm process, although we will see if the deadlines are met, because this manufacturing process is still is in development.

Navi, according to the latest rumors, will have a special circuit developed for the maximization of Artificial Intelligence, something quite similar to the technology introduced very recently by NVIDIA in the NVIDIA Tesla V100, who has developed the Tensor cores, which implement a circuitry and a design optimized for Artificial Intelligence. The delay is AMD would occur, because the company has not had time to develop and optimize features for Artificial Intelligence in the new Vega GPUs and that it has taken two years to develop this new GPU. Vega was already well advanced and there was no room to implement specific technologies for AI.

AMD's efforts to try to compete with NVIDIA in special technologies or simply, in gaming, seem to always be in vain, because NVIDIA seems to be a step or two ahead. While the Vega will be good solutions for AI, being able to with the powerful algorithms necessary for this technology, the truth is that it continues behind NVIDIA in many fields. NVIDIA already has the Tesla V100s for AI exclusively, so AMD is at least a generation behind its most direct competitor.

Jumping to 7nm is a complex task and we have already seen how 10nm has choked Intel, so we must be cautious with this jump from 14nm to 7nm without going through 10nm, the logical intermediate step. Jumping to 7nm should bring an improvement in consumption and performance, but we are already seeing how inefficient the Vega are if we compare them with the Pascal, in terms of consumption. AMD at the moment is saved by the mining of cryptocurrencies, where until now it has been the queen.

  1. It was said that Navi would have 6144 stream processors, that is, 2048 more than Vega but be careful with that increase just and they would reach the level of the Geforce 1080Ti but not the level of Volta ...

    A year ago I commented that one day AMD would have to put together 2 video cards to compete with a single one from Nvidia in the high-end just as AMD did with the Radeon 480 and Geforce 1080, we are not that far from that scenario.
