Western Digital presents its Enterprise UltraStar HS14 units, which make use of MSR technology and allow a storage capacity of 14TB.
The advancement of technology requires systems that have high performance and in many cases high capacity, to store data, especially if we are talking about photography or 4K video, where these formats require units with larger space, due to their great weight. New trends and new developments work on the improvement of technologies based on magnetic hard drives or HDD. Western Digital has developed MAMR technology, which will allow reaching 40TB in a single HDD. Until that day arrives, WD itself has developed 14TB drives.
Western Digital has developed drives of 14TB each, which are included in the Enterprise UltraStar HS14 family, which provide a storage density of 1.034 per square inch. This storage capacity has been achieved by using Staggered Magnetic Recording or SMR technology, which means that the performance of rewriting already written sectors is slightly reduced compared to other HDD units that do not make use of this technology.
In return, it should be noted that the HDDs that make use of helium have a rotation speed of 7.200RPM and have a 512MB cache, which allows a trade-off in performance. These new UltraStar HS14 HDD units offer several technological improvements that increase the reliability and durability of hard drives and also, since these units are included in the Enterprise category, we can reach 2.5 million hours between average time of failures and they will arrive, these units, with a five-year warranty, which is also very interesting. SSDs are better at read and write speeds, but capacity wise they seem stagnant.
