AMD Ryzen processors, according to ASUS, will support DDR4 RAM at 2666MHz and ECC type

The new AMD Ryzen processors will support DDR4 RAM with a maximum base frequency of 2666MHz and will also support DDR4 ECC-type RAM.

Some very specific details about the new ASUS AM4 PRIME-X370 Pro motherboards have been leaked, revealing that these new motherboards, designed for AMD Ryzen processors, will support RMA DDR4 ECC memory ( we have already discussed the characteristics of this RAM ) and that the maximum default speed of the RAM that will be supported will be 2666MHz.

It should be noted that it seems that only AMD Ryzen processors will support this type of memory, therefore if we install one of these memories, if they work correctly, as happens with Kaby Lake motherboards, which support DDR4 ECC RAM memories, but they will work in non-ECC mode. The seventh generation AMD A-series and AMD Athlon chips will not support ECC memory, therefore they will only support non-ECC memory.

AMD Ryzen processors will be the top of the range, divided into three large groups and we know that AMD will launch APUs and discrete processors based on the ZEN architecture, although nothing is known about them. According to this capture of the ASUS motherboard, these more 'simple' chips, in addition to only supporting non-ECC memory, will only support 4 / 2400MHz DDR2133 RAM frequencies.

It should be noted that for the average user it is absurd to install ECC RAM memories, which have a cost of at least 25% more compared to non-ECC ones (the ones we usually install in our equipment), since they are designed for critical systems where you can not hang for problems in a bit of information. Although this information is interesting because the Ryzen have three versions, the 'X', which are with XFR technology that applies automatic overclocking, the 'normal', which do not have the 'X', with overclocking capacity but without XFR and the PRO version.

Putting all the processors together has caused them all to support ECC. Some users may be interested in these memories, especially those who are dedicated to photo and video editing and cannot allow the team to get hung up on the task, since it is not only wasting time, but also money.     ECC memories start to make more and more sense as the amount of installed RAM grows (since the possibilities of bit flips also increase). It is especially useful for critical systems for obvious reasons, but not exclusively.
