Marvell Releases Power-Enhancing SSD Controller

Marvell launches the new SATA 88SS1079 controller, which offers an improvement in the consumption and production price of these drives.

SSD drives require controller chips that allow information management and memory control. The most common controllers are those of Marvell and to continue leading in this field and has announced the new SATA 88SS1079 controllers, which among others, allows improvement in power consumption in SSD units. This new control unit comes to replace the current Marvell 88SS1074 controller, which is used in a large number of SSD drives.

This new controller differs from the previous one, in that it integrates some components that until now were soldered on the PCB, which when included within the controller itself, allows not only the improvement in energy efficiency, but also allows the reduction of the costs. We are talking about an improvement in the minimum consumption, since the SSD units have a negligible consumption and the cost reduction is an interesting point, since it allows the final units to be cheaper.

Something that hardly suffers variation, is the performance, which barely varied effectively, therefore, we should not notice improvements in read and write speeds. The Marvell 88SS1079 unit will have as up to now two cores with four channels, with the same performance, all remaining in energy efficiency and improvement in costs, so the improvement is very small in this case.

We do not know how much it will reduce the cost of SSD units and the consumption improvement will also be minimal. That the price of SSD units is reduced we currently see it complicated, since the price of NAND Flash memories is on the rise due to the growing demand for these memory units by smartphones, so we will have to wait until they balance supply and demand, who knows when it will be.
