Microsoft to Unveil New Windows Operating System and Laptop Today

Microsoft will be in New York to unveil new products at its hardware and software event. While they have already used the city to unveil products from the Surface range, today's event will focus more on Windows and its new lightweight variants to use in conjunction with the power of the cloud.

Windows 10 S

This is the great bet of Windows in this event. With it, they try to acquire more market share in the field of education. With the Windows 10 Creators update, Microsoft highlighted its efforts to be more present among students. And a light operating system, added to the new Paint 3D, Minecraft, Office and other content focused on creativity, those of Redmond are going in the right direction.

This version of the operating system isn't intended to be a fratricide, as laptops with Windows 10 compete in a different market segment. However, its target is laptops running Chrome OS, aiming to compete with them by offering versatility, integration of more widely used applications, and improved battery life. This includes Office, the world's most popular office suite, which would also have a lightweight version for these devices via an app in the Windows Store. It's important to note that this operating system only allows the installation of apps approved through the official Windows Store , which, incidentally, significantly limits the customization options that characterize Windows operating systems.

Windows Cloudbook? Surface Laptop?

Today, no successor to the current Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 is expected. Microsoft is rumored to introduce a new physical product that makes use of the new Windows 10 S. At today's event, clearly focused on the education sector, it was could reveal a Windows Cloudbook (Did someone say Surface Laptop?) according to a recent leak, which would open the niche of cloud-based laptops, being able to compete against Google's Chromebooks.

It is not known exactly if Microsoft will be the manufacturer of this new product, or if they will leave it in the hands of other manufacturers like Google did with its Nexus smartphones and Chromebooks. But it is speculated that they could offer a wide variety of notebooks from Dell, HP, Acer and others.

It can be seen in the leaks that these laptops could have premium materials, such as aluminum for the entire body, 13.5-inch PixelSense screens, as well as alcantara on the keyboard. According to the leaks, it would also have a full USB, a mini DisplayPort, and the proprietary Surface charging connector. It would be available in 4 colors and would weigh 1.25 kg.

This premium option could give a buzz in the cloud-based laptop market, where Google currently dominates (especially in the United States).
