Toshiba leads the enterprise storage market with its new 16TB MG08 series hard drives

Toshiba announced the launch of MG08 hard drives for the professional segment with capacities up to 16 TB

Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH is positioned at the forefront of the enterprise storage market with the launch of new MG08 series hard drives with a capacity of 16 TB and conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology, the largest offered in the industry until the moment.

With 33% more capacity than today's widely used 12TB drives and 14% more than previous 14TB models, the new MG16 series 08TB drives support the broadest range of drives. applications and operating systems, and are adapted to mixed random and sequential read and write loads, both in cloud environments and in traditional data centers.

The MG08 series is the second generation of Toshiba's helium sealed HDD family and the eighth generation of its Enterprise Capacity hard drive family. Toshiba has managed to lead the industry with these new 16 TB capacity drives with improved energy efficiency using the 9 helium disc design introduced last year on the 14 TB models, as well as an advanced process of their own. of precision laser welding that guarantees that the helium remains sealed inside the casing of the unit ”, explains the general director of the business unit of HDD of Toshiba Electronics Europe, Larry Martínez-Palomo.

The MG08s offer 7.200 RPM performance, 550TB annual workload capacity, 2,5 million hour MTTF, 512Mib[5] cache buffer, and a choice of SATA and SAS interfaces, all on a standard 3,5'' drive.

The MG08 series once again shows Toshiba's commitment to advancing HDD design to meet the evolving need for storage devices suitable for use in servers and cloud storage infrastructure. While data growth maintains an explosive rate, the industry-leading 16TB CMR capacity will help cloud service providers and storage solution designers achieve higher storage densities for cloud and hybrid cloud environments as well as in storage racks in on-premises facilities. “With improved energy efficiency and 16 TB of capacity”, -adds Martínez-Palomo, “the MG08 series contributes to reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (CTO) of storage infrastructures designed for applications such as data protection, aggregation of big data, the distribution of content and the digital archive ”.

Shipment of 08 TB MG16 series disk drive samples to customers will begin sequentially in Q2019 XNUMX.
