Captain Tsubasa, better known as Champions: Oliver and Benji get a new game. It will arrive this year on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.
When we talk about football games, it's impossible not to think of this year's FIFA . That's understandable, because Electronic Arts has the exclusive FIFA license and it's not easy to compete without that advantage. But it seems that Captain Tsubasa, known in Spain as Oliver and Benji, could be a real contender.
A new Captain Tsubasa game, and it's not for mobile
Some may remember that a few years ago a Captain Tsubasa (Oliver and Benji) mobile game was released. It was the typical gacha -based title designed to easily cash in on loyal fans. It probably wasn't what many were expecting, because it has the potential to offer a satisfying football game for fans tired of the FIFA formula.
To everyone's surprise, Bandai Namco just announced Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions. It will be for PC, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. It seems that, for now, Google Stadia and Xbox One are left without it. It won't be a Japan-only release, no, because Bandai Namco's social media has posted a PEGI-rated trailer.
That means his arrival in the West is set for sometime this year, with relatively little left to go. Does it mean that we will finally have a replacement for FIFA? It depends, because he has to face a couple of problems
First of all, there is the handicap that this title is mainly focused on Champions fans: Oliver and Benji, who knows whether to recognize the name of Captain Tsubasa. Then there is the fact that it is a game based on a manga and anime license. They tend to be very controlled on the issue of ambition, time and budget and have a very difficult time reaching high levels of quality.
