Organizations increase their investment in Modern Data Protection

Veeam Software has recently released its 2023 Cloud Protection Trends Report, which covers four key as-a-service scenarios. They are Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS), and Backup and Disaster Recovery as a Service (BaaS/DRaaS). The survey revealed that companies are recognizing the growing need to protect their SaaS environments.

For example, nearly 90% of surveyed Microsoft 365 customers use complementary measures instead of relying solely on built-in recovery capabilities. Preparedness for rapid recovery from cyber and ransomware attacks was the most frequently used reason for this backup, with regulatory compliance the next most popular business driver.

A survey affirms that large companies are improving their cybersecurity

While new IT workloads are being launched in the cloud at a much faster rate than old workloads are being retired in the data center, 88% brought workloads from the cloud back to their data center. Some reasons include development, cost and performance optimization, and disaster recovery.

As cybersecurity remains a critical concern, data protection strategies have evolved. Most organizations are delegating backup responsibilities to specialists, rather than requiring each workload owner to protect their own data. Most workload backups in the cloud are now performed by the backup team .

Today, 98% of organizations use a cloud-hosted infrastructure as part of their data protection strategy. DRaaS is perceived as outweighing the tactical benefits of BaaS.

But some PaaS administrators are incorrectly assuming that the native durability of cloud-hosted services exempts them from the need for backup. 34% of organizations they still do not backup their shared files hosted in the cloud. And 15% do not make backups of their databases hosted in the cloud.

This is still good news regarding cybersecurity. With the constant growth of ransomware, backups are one of the most important forms of cybersecurity, especially if the company's data is critical to its operation.
