Yesterday the Council of Ministers approved a modification to consumer regulations to extend the mandatory minimum guarantee that every product must offer for sale in Spain. With this modification, the minimum warranty to repair a product with factory defects is raised from two to three years. With this they want cell phones or computer and console hardware to have more time to be repaired. This will affect to all purchases from January 1, 2022.
More years of minimum warranty and spare parts
With the increase in the minimum guarantee years imposed by the Government of Spain, a product will have to be designed so as not to break due to factory failures for at least three years. If the product fails, the company will have to repair or replace it. It will also be mandatory for companies to offer repairs and replacement parts for ten years after they stop manufacturing the product.
In the case of digital goods or services, the minimum warranty period is two years. This applies to "those that allow the creation, treatment, access or storage of data in digital format«. This includes software for video and audio sharing, file hosting, word processing, social networking, online email and instant messaging services. Free or open source software is not included.
With all this, digital services are expected to last a minimum of time. In the case of physical devices, it will be mandatory that the minimum warranty years and spare parts for at least ten years, allow repairing a mobile or laptop without having to buy a new one as parts are available to repair them.
