Europe approves that all new vehicles in 2035 cannot be combustion, they must be electric

In 2035, if you want to buy a new car, it will most likely not be a combustion car and it will have to be an electric car. The European Parliament has given its formal approval to the new vehicle emission standards that the 27 countries of the EU would effectively ban the widespread sale of cars and vans European Union for 2035.

Three hundred and forty members voted in favor of the standards. 279 voted against and 21 abstained. An initial agreement was reached last October on the new regulations, which require all cars and vans sold in the EU emit zero CO2 emissions in the middle of the next decade.

The end of combustion cars begins in the European Union

The legislation still has to go through a couple of stages before becoming law. They must be formally approved by the Council of the EU and published in the Official Journal of the EU. But the Reuters portal points out that the final approval is expected to take place in March. When approved, the world's largest trading bloc and home to major automakers such as Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz will be on track to almost completely eliminate vehicles powered by combustion engines.

The proposed rules are part of the project "fit for 55» from the EU, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030. Bloomberg notes that road transport currently accounts for around one fifth of EU emissions, making their reduction key if the bloc wants to be carbon neutral by 2050. The new EU rules will also call for a 55% cut in car emissions by 2030 compared to 2021 levels. There will be exceptions. for manufacturers producing less than 10.000 cars or 22.000 vans per year. There are also similar plans for trucks and buses, which foresee a 90% reduction in their emissions by 2040.

The EU deadline is similar to plans announced by other governments around the world to try to stop climate change. In 2020, the UK announced plans to ban the sale of new non-electric cars by 2030 and new hybrid cars by 2035. The State of California is also going to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035, and lawmakers from some other US states have expressed interest in following in its footsteps.
