Red Hat, provider of open source solutions specialized in Linux; has announced the general availability of Red Hat Device Edge. This solution provides a platform designed for resource-constrained environments that require small form factor computing at the device-driven edge. This includes IoT gateways, industrial controllers, smart displays, point-of-sale terminals, vending machines and robots.

Red Hat Device Edge incorporates an enterprise-ready and supported distribution from the open source community project led by Red Hat and MicroShift along with an operating system optimized for the edge. It has been built on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Includes Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform for more consistent Day 1 and Day 2 management of hundreds to thousands of sites and devices.
What Red Hat Device Edge offers customers and partners
A minimal environment that supports the deployment of workloads on small, resource-constrained devices in harsh environments. This preserves system resources for workloads instead of using them for the device's own operation.
Two custom deployment options are also offered based on specific needs. The Red Hat Device Edge solution with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Podman is presented as a suitable solution for very small deployments with static applications. It is possible to add MicroShift during, or after deployment to bring Kubernetes for more dynamic environments. Deliver a more consistent operating experience at the edge by using tools and processes from centralized environments.
They highlight their greater flexibility for the workload with support for the deployment and management of bare-metal, virtual, or containerized applications. Simplified deployment at scale with automation makes it easy to monitor thousands of devices in heterogeneous environments.

The general availability of Red Hat Device Edge adds the power of Ansible Automation Platform to Red Hat Device Edge. Red Hat Device Edge now offers greater predictability and repeatability in automating edge workloads, standardized and repeatable configurations, policies and connectivity deployments; Improved security and compliance at the edge with automated management and maintenance; reducing barriers to entry for IT and OT teams; and ability to configure and audit necessary devices and services.
