Wi-Fi 7 reaches speeds 2,4 times faster than Wi-Fi 6

MediaTek has successfully conducted the world's first live demonstration of Wi-Fi 7 technology and confirmed that the first Wi-Fi 7 products are expected to be available in 2023. The MediaTek demonstration showed how its Filogic Wi-Fi 7 technology can achieve the maximum speed defined by IEEE 802.11be, the official name of the upcoming Wi-Fi 7 standard.

Wi-Fi 7 will offer speeds 2,4 times faster than Wi-Fi 6 , achievable with the same number of antennas thanks to support for 320MHz channels and 4K Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) technology. This format could deliver speeds of at least 30 gigabits per second (Gbps), easily exceeding 40Gbps. In comparison, Wi-Fi 6 supports speeds of up to 9,6 Gbps, while its predecessor, Wi-Fi 5, lags behind with a performance of 3,5 Gbps.

The first Wi-Fi 7 speed test impresses with its capabilities

Wi-Fi 7 will also support all available spectrums, including 2,4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz. The new standard will be able to support demanding applications such as 8K video streaming, virtual reality, gaming on the cloud and the general uses of cloud computing.

The multi-link operation technology that combines several channels in different frequency bands was also shown, so that network traffic works without interruption even if there are interferences or congestion in the bands. That's why MLO technology is a critical component for anything that needs a constant connection, like video streaming and gaming.

Although the first commercial products with Wi-Fi 7 will arrive in 2023, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) could certify it in 2024. It could replace Ethernet port connections for ultra-high-bandwidth applications, making it ideal for home, office, and industrial networks. It would also provide connectivity for multiplayer AR/VR applications, cloud gaming, 4K video conferencing , and 8K streaming. However, its implementation could start out very expensive, as even advanced Wi-Fi 6e networks currently cost over a thousand euros.
