Overwatch stopped receiving content, except cosmetics, because they were making the sequel
Kaplan admits it hurt to reuse events in Overwatch. They could only make cosmetics to make up for the lack of content.
As time passed after its release, Overwatch players noticed that Activision Blizzard kept reusing game modes already featured in previous events. It did not fail that they did not stop putting new cosmetics to encourage playing for loot boxes or buying them with real money.
The sequel is to blame for the lack of content
And gamers weren't the only ones noticing the blatant replay of content in the past year. Game director Jeff Kaplan confirmed what fans have been imagining since Overwatch 2 was announced: the sequel is the main reason there were hardly any new game modes or content except for characters and event skins.
Speaking to the Kotaku portal, Jeff Kaplan acknowledged the recent lack of support for Overwatch in the form of content with substance. It revealed that the team has been struggling to divide their time between supporting the original and developing the next sequel.
The team was excited to be able to announce Overwatch 2. Now they feel like they can have that open dialogue with the community and justify the paucity of content in the original game. Kaplan went on to say that repeating seasonal events was painful for the development team, especially since he feels like his team is full of ideas, sitting right next to one of the designers of the Revenge of Doctor Junkenstein game mode. PvE that enchanted players playing during Halloween events; which told him that he has ideas for the Halloween event but to which he had to respond that they were focused on the sequel. He insists it was a difficult thing for them and they hope to bring a lot of new content when the sequel comes out.
