ASUS ThunderboltEX 3-TR expansion card introduced
This ASUS card is based on two Thunderbolt 3 ports with a transfer speed of 40GB / s and a physical USB Type-C interface. It is also accompanied with two mini DisplayPort, for video and audio output.
ASUS ThunderboltEX 3-TR has been developed to be installed on motherboards with PCI-Express 3.0 x4 slots. Note that previously ASUS has already released a similar card based on an Intel Alpine Ridge controller. The new card is based on a more powerful and more powerful Intel Titan Ridge controller.
The ASUS ThunderboltEX 3 card only had one Thunderbolt port, due to the limitations of the controller. That card was complemented by a mini DisplayPort 1.2. The current model doubles the number of Thunderbolt and DisplayPort ports, plus these new DisplayPorts are based on 1.4 specs.
Specifically, this card makes use of the Intel Titan Ridge architecture JHL7540 chip and is compatible with motherboards based on the Z490 and H570 chipsets. This expansion card requires additional power through a 6-pin PCIe connector
At the moment the ASUS ThunderboltEX 3-TR has no release date or fixed price. The previous card of its kind based on Alpine Ridge was priced at around € 100 at the time of its launch.
