A new version of Meta's virtual and mixed reality headset, the Meta Quest, has been announced. The Meta Quest 3 was announced ahead of today's Meta Gaming Showcase, where the company is likely to unveil several new games, in anticipation of what would have been E3 2023.
The Meta Quest 3 will cost $499,99 in the US before taxes, will have 128GB of storage, and will go on sale in fall 2023. Meta says it will provide more details on the headset during Meta Connect on September 27.
Meta further improves its Meta Quest with a third version
Meta hasn't provided specific details about the Quest 3, but has promised it will feature " higher resolution, improved performance, cutting-edge Meta Reality technology, and a slimmer, more comfortable form factor " for its next-generation VR headset. Meta also claims to have "completely redesigned the Quest 3's Touch Plus controllers with a more streamlined and ergonomic design."
The Meta Quest 3 is the successor to the Quest 2, which was released in 2020 and has become the most successful and well-supported virtual reality headset on the market. Like the Quest 2, the Quest 3 will be wireless and won't require a powerful PC to operate . The Quest 3 will be compatible with the entire Quest 2 game library, and Meta promises to deliver twice the graphics performance of the Quest 2, with higher resolution displays and finer pixels.
Unlike the Quest Pro, which can track your face to make your cartoonish avatar more convincing in the metaverse , the Quest 3's features don't appear to be significantly superior to the Quest 2's . Its passthrough mode has received some improvements, with high-fidelity color passthrough (the ability to see what's behind the headset using the cameras), which will allow for playing augmented reality games that utilize the Quest 3's tracking cameras. The Quest 3 also includes redesigned Touch Plus controllers, incorporating the haptic feedback improvements found in the controllers that came with the Quest Pro.
Meta adds that it will continue selling the Quest 2 , albeit at a lower starting price. The 128GB model will be $299,99 USD before tax starting June 4th, and the 256GB model will be $349,99 USD before tax. The company also announced that an upcoming software update for the headset will boost the CPU and GPU performance of the Meta Quest 2.
