Samsung stops producing Blu-ray players due to its meager sales
The market for Blu-ray players is dead according to Samsung, for this reason it will stop manufacturing players of this type for 4K resolutions.
Much has happened since CDs and later DVDs took over the market and billions of units were sold annually (with both audiovisual and virgin content). That has passed away thanks to the Streaming of Netflix, YouTube, Twitch or Spotify platforms, among others. Platforms that allow you to enjoy hundreds of hours of content without getting up from the couch. This has led Samsung to announce that it would not launch new 1080p and 4K Blu-ray players in the United States, which was the company's main market.
Samsung to stop launching Blu-ray players in the United States
The company has noted that Blu-ray optical discs have extremely low popularity. They have highlighted that in the high resolution market they only represent 5.3% of sales, while DVDs account for 57.9% of sales. Quite clarifying data, to be fooled.
Its last 4K Blu-ray players were released in 2017 and the company did not launch new models in 2018. Samsung would be manufacturing the UBD-M9500, a high-end 4K player for 2019, which would have been canceled. The company has stopped its development, because it would only have generated losses. They could also stop producing them because the company's 4K players lag behind the rest of the industry. As an example, the company developed its own HDR10 standard, dubbed HDR10 + for streaming and physical format, rather than adding support for Dolby Vision.
Additionally, SmartTVs can already support 4K streaming easily without the need for other devices. This makes Blu-ray players pointless. Netflix has a giant catalog of 4K content and YouTube already prioritizes 4K content over other 'lower quality' content
