For a long time 4K monitors were really prohibitive, but now they are starting to come at relatively reasonable prices. While the NVIDIA RTX Turing architecture are the first intended for 4K, Sharp already works on 8K monitors. And it is that the Sharp company has presented a 31.5-inch monitor with HDR and 8K resolution. This monitor offers a resolution of 7680 × 4320 pixels with a refresh rate of 120Hz. Logically the 8K is very, very far from being a new standard for monitors.
Sharp features an 8K @ 120Hz resolution monitor
This new monitor is a very important leap from current systems. We have to take into account with respect to a 4K @ 60Hz monitor, it assumes that it offers four times more pixels. It also has twice the refresh rate. To give us an idea, we talked about this 8K monitor offering eight times more pixels per second.
To develop this monitor Sharp has used IGZO technology that offers 800nits of brightness for HDR. Previously the company already presented an 8K @ 120Hz monitor, somewhat more rustic based on DisplayPort 1.2. In this case I need 8 DisplayPort 1.2 cables to work. This would use DisplayPort 1.4, so you only need 4 of these cables. They would be less if the Display Stream Compression 1.2 technology of the current DisplayPort 1.4 is used. For this type of monitors, very advanced hardware is also required, so at the moment, it is intended for professional use.
Additionally, the company has presented an All-in-One PC based on an 8K @ 120Hz screen. Its design is quite similar to that of the Mac Pro, but with a much better resolution and with HDR. This would eliminate the need to manage so many cables, since the monitor to PC connections are internal.
It should be noted that beyond the technical interest of this monitor and being a curiosity, it has little more interest. It's years away for us to see gaming monitors and even more years for them to be reasonably priced.
