VESA delays DisplayPort 2.0 standard until late 2021

DisplayPort 2.0 connector delayed to end of 2021 due to pandemic in 2020

Currently the two most widely used video interfaces are DisplayPort and HDMI. The DisplayPort standard is more robust and offers data transfer, among others. VESA in mid-2019 announced the DisplayPort 2.0 standard, with major improvements. The most notable is that this new standard triples the bandwidth of DisplayPort 1.4a.

DisplayPort 2.0 standard adoption delayed until late 2021

The new DisplayPort 2.0 standard offers us a theoretical bandwidth of 80Gbps, which in practice will be up to 77.4Gbps. A significant increase that also allows it to stay ahead of HDMI 2.1 which offers a bandwidth of 48Gbps.

DisplayPort 2.0 was initially intended for 8K @ 60Hz televisions and monitors with HDR. Both televisions and monitors with support for this resolution are already beginning to be marketed. Although at the moment no one supports it and it seems that it will take time to be supported. But also DisplayPort 2.0 has been developed to support the following resolutions:

  • 16K@60Hz
  • 3 displays 10K @ 60Hz
  • 2 displays 8K @ 120Hz
  • 3 displays 4K @ 90Hz
  • 2 displays 4K @ 144Hz

Although it was planned for the end of 2020, it seems that the pandemic would have caused it to be delayed. It will not be until the end of 2021 when we see computers, monitors and televisions with this video interface.

VESA indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant delays. The maintainer of this standard indicates that the pandemic has prevented the standardization body from performing the PlugTest. They are meetings of engineers and hardware developers to analyze, tweak and decide how the standard is implemented.

Typically VESA holds a couple of these events annually for developers. In 2020 this process has been completely impossible due to the pandemic. Hence, a delay has been generated, which will continue until these meetings cannot be held.
