AMD already has 25% share of laptops in Japan

Despite the fact that the Ryzen 4000U and 4000H to market, AMD is improving its position in notebooks. Intel's processor shortage is prompting assemblers to turn to AMD for help. In Japan the market share of laptops with Ryzen processor are increasing at full speed. Currently it would already be in a quota of 1 in 4 laptops, a very good figure.

We want to remind you that the AMD Ryzen 4000U and Ryzen 4000H notebook processors are based on the Zen2 @ 7nm architecture. This means that the cores are the same as those used in the Ryzen 3000. It seems that AMD has a confusing marketing strategy that can lead to misunderstandings.

AMD increases market share in notebooks in Japan

According to the data, as of December 23, 2019, 24.3% of the laptops sold had an AMD processor compared to 75.4% of Intel. This data without a context is not easily understandable. It should be noted that on January 1, 2019, the market share of laptops with an AMD processor was only 1.2%.

The main factor in the improvement of market share is due to the price. Laptops based on Intel processors have an average cost of 149.000 yen, about 1.200 euros to change. On the other hand, laptops based on AMD Ryzen cost on average 121.000 yen, about 990 euros to change. As we see there is an approximate difference of 200 euros, which is a lot of money.

But there are other factors, such as the shortage of Intel processors. Assemblers don't want to lose sales and are massively launching laptops based on AMD processors. What's more, the company should increase market share with the Ryzen 4000U with 8 cores and 16 threads and a 15W TDP for budget laptops. For gaming laptops we have the Ryzen 4000H, also with 8 cores and 16 threads but with a TDP of 35W.
