Intel and NVIDIA deny laptop sabotage to AMD

Intel and NVIDIA come out on charges of blocking mid-range and high-end graphics for gaming laptops based on AMD Ryzen Mobile processors

A few days ago rumors indicated that there was an agreement between Intel and NVIDIA in the laptop market. This agreement indicated that Intel was preventing NVIDIA from selling mid-range and high-end graphics for gaming laptops based on AMD processors. Both Intel and NVIDIA have strongly denied these allegations and provided explanations.

Intel and NVIDIA say not to block mid-range and high-end graphics for AMD gaming laptops

The information released a few days ago is based on these two points:

  • Few gaming laptops based on Ryzen 4000 Mobile processors mount NVIDIA RTX 2000 graphics. Manufacturers, despite wanting to offer better solutions, have been limited.
  • We have seen that the Ryzen 4000 Mobile at most came with an RTX 2060. Gamign laptops with an Intel processor make use of graphics up to RTX 2080.

If we take a general look, it seems that there is a clear conspiracy against AMD. But Ben Berraondo, NVIDIA's Regional Head of Public Relations, has flatly denied this. What's more, he has given a technical explanation that seems convincing.

Berraondo notes that laptop manufacturers are independent and chose and configure their laptops based on their criteria. Perhaps the relevant data that it gives is that the Ryzen 4000 Mobile are limited to PCIe 3.0 x8. With so few PCIe lanes, it was not feasible to mount something higher than the RTX 2060, since it would have generated a bottleneck.

It should be noted that the Ryzen 5000H, although AMD has not revealed it, would have PCIe 3.0 x8. Lenovo and ASUS have already announced laptops with a Ryzen 5000 Mobile with up to an RTX 3080. Something that leaves open doubts. We will have to wait for the number of PCIe lanes that the Ryzen 5000H will have to be confirmed.

This has also been denied by Intel

As is logical, from Intel they have also denied these accusations. The company indicates that they do not have such agreements with NVDIA.

These allegations are false and there is no such agreement. Intel is committed to conducting business with integrity and uncompromising professionalism

  1. Even if this were true (I am not claiming such a thing) they would never admit it, because it is an illegal practice. The antitrust commission could take action and impose heavy penalties on Intel and NVIDIA.

And also no agreement is necessary. They could simply put pressure on manufacturers without having to reach any kind of agreement, and that is more complicated to investigate and prove. AMD still has a limited capacity to supply APUs to large notebook manufacturers. This means that they still rely heavily on Intel to build entire lines of notebooks. Intel has the ability to pressure manufacturers not to implement high-end GPUs in notebooks with AMD APUs. Another issue is to exert that pressure. Here you wouldn't need NVIDIA to exert such potential pressure.

In any case, I don't see the benefit this would bring to NVIDIA, as NVIDIA is interested in selling the maximum number of chips, whether in Intel or AMD notebooks. If it stops selling chips to notebooks that run on AMD APUs, it would lose sales. On the other hand, AMD doesn't have enough capacity to supply the needs of major manufacturers, while Intel does. Intel doesn't need to pressure manufacturers to sell everything it makes to the industry either.

  2. haha that nobody believes it, that amd is better than Nvidia and intel we all know, as gnu / linux is better than windows and MacOS too, that's why they are bundled to fight against the best
