The price of RAM will not drop, at least for now

There is no truce for RAM, it will continue to grow in the coming months due to the shortage of NAND Flash memory, especially due to the demand for smartphones.

Last year the first information appeared on the galloping rise in the price of RAM memories and SSDs, due to the great demand for NAND Flash memories for smartphones, since they use a memory equal to that used in memory modules. RAM memory and those of the SSD. So far we have a price increase, which is around 50% compared to the price of the summer of 2016. Prices for the moment will continue to rise and there are no forecasts that this escalation will decrease.

The basis for this flood is based on the typical demand-price effect. The departure of Kaby Lake processors and the Christmas period, where a lot of computing is sold, causes extreme demand, we must also add, as we have mentioned, smartphones are influencing and things do not point to improve. It should be noted that this can be further complicated by the arrival of the new AMD Ryzen processors on the market.

We must hope that things do not improve in the coming weeks or months in terms of the price of RAM memories, since theoretically all companies are manufacturing at their best. We only have to pay more for DDR4 RAM, whose smartphone version, LPDDR4, will continue to be in high demand.

Pei-Ing Lee, president of Nanya Technology, told the tech publication Digitimes that prices will continue to rise at least until the second quarter of this year. He added that DDR4 RAM prices should stabilize during the third quarter. Based on the information we have, we recommend upgrading systems before prices increase further. While now isn't the ideal time to upgrade your RAM, if necessary, you should do so as soon as possible.
