AMD Ryzen 7 1800X manages to raise its frequency autonomously up to 4.1GHz thanks to the Extended Frequency Range or XFR technology ... and it could be just the beginning.
The most interesting feature of AMD Ryzen processors is the XFR technology. This technology, called Extended Frequency Range, is a technology that allows AMD processors to increase their own frequency without the user having to touch any parameter and limited by the heat dissipation power of the installed cooler. In a demonstration, they have presented how this XFR technology works, during the Ryzen Tech Day event held in San Francisco, which had been a secret until now by the NDA.
This feature will only be available on processors that have the 'X' nomenclature in their name. Allows the processor to raise its frequency beyond Boost mode. XFR is scalable and dependent at all times on the cooling system used, therefore, the more efficient the cooling system in dissipating heat, the more frequency the processor reaches. We should not know about overclocking, or touch anything, the processor does it autonomously.
It is not completely clear in the video, but it seems that the processor is cooled by a liquid cooling system for parts and not an all-in-one kit. The processor used has been the most powerful of AMD, the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X. The XFR in this case has been in steps of 100MHz up to 4.1GHz. You can see from the demo (a bit bad for the camera angle), that the 1800X processor is running at 4.1GHz when using the Cinebench R15 thanks to the XFR. When the same benchmark is passed on a single core, we also see that the frequency rises to 4.1GHz.
It makes it clear that the Ryzen 7 1800X processor has great power and that XFR technology is very useful, since it allows the user, through good cooling, to have an extremely powerful processor, speeding up tasks. Undoubtedly, the XFR is a great ace up the sleeve for AMD, the problem is that we must invest good money in good cooling, since the more dissipation power of the cooler, the more the frequency will rise automatically.
