Project Scorpio does not carry an AMD Ryzen processor for this reason according to Microsoft

Microsoft explains why its Scorpio Project does not have an AMD Ryzen CPU

Since a few days ago all the specifications concerning Microsoft's new console, the Project Scorpio, were officially released, the complaints about its processor (more than justified) have only multiplied. The reason is very clear, we have the same CPU as in past generations such as Xbox One, Xbox One S, PS4 and PS4 Pro. 8 Jaguar cores at a frequency at the limit of their capabilities, 2,30 GHz, will be in charge together with the graphic section of moving all titles to 4K 60FPS resolution, as Microsoft has promised since its announcement. This goal seems to be quite difficult to meet since the old-generation processor seems to present a bottleneck in certain cases.

Despite what has been said above about the probable insufficient power of the processor, Microsoft has responded to the Eurogamer media, that this CPU will be more than enough to carry out this function and that it will also ensure backward compatibility with Xbox One S.

“On the CPU side, there has been a lot of speculation that the Scorpio would feature AMD's new Ryzen technology, something we thought unlikely due to lead times, not to mention Microsoft told us last year that the new console would feature an eight-core CPU.

All signs point to the uploaded Jaguar cores found on Xbox One, and the Scorpio's CPU configuration is indeed an evolution of that technology, but subject to extensive customization and offloading of key tasks to dedicated hardware. ", Eurogamer.

“So eight cores, organized as two clusters with a total of 4MB of L2 cache. These are unique CPUs customized for the Scorpio running at 2.30 GHz. Alluding to the goals, we wanted to maintain 100 percent compatibility with the Xbox One and Xbox One S while increasing the performance delivered. "says Nick Baker, Xbox's chief architect of architecture.

  1. You can not allow many changes to maintain full compatibility with current coffee machines, that is its biggest drag ... I still want to see the video that force running in native 4k and at 60 fps, if they succeeded it would be something historic.

    Good article Andrés.

    1. Thank you! Let's see if they can manage to get that native 4K at 60 FPS, because this way they will have to reduce the graphics so much that it will end up seeing better in 1080p than in 4K.

      A greeting!

  2. I have not been interested in the console world since PS2 died. For multiple reasons. Among them, that a console is a closed PC with no possibility of expansion. And I won’t go into more detail, because I would be writing until tomorrow. For me, the last “authentic” console was PS2. Or Xbox. Afterwards, all that came was… a bad copy of what a PC offers, enhancing its negative points and ignoring its positive points. Steam machines were forgotten. Because the PC, beyond using one operating system or another, has been invented for decades. And yet, here we have the new next-generation consoles every x years… which are always closed systems, with no possibility of improvement and which are already stillborn before they hit the market. Oh, that’s right, I forgot. They have exclusives.

    1. After the PS1 and 2, with the arrival of the DLC I went to the PC and I do not regret it for a moment I saved a lot of money and more now that the consoles only last 2 years and they release a new one ...

      1. Yes Pablo, that's what I was referring to among other things with paid DLCS, portal subscriptions, season passes ...

    2. I give you absolutely right. I think exactly like you. The current consoles are closed systems that to make matters worse they charge us double for practically the same with four more features and in the case of Sony with its Playstation 4 Pro they leave much to be desired as reviews. I have continued with Sony 3 and Xbox 360 (of course with that serial run built with good work appeared on the market) to expand my hobbies a bit consoles, but seeing what I've seen lately I have opted for the pc since January 2016, enjoying all the above and all the future that at the same time appears on that platform, that is undeniable no matter how much the owners of the current consoles, although they do not have part of those exclusives.

      1. True. To say that I don't miss certain exclusives would be a lie. But taking these off, there's no color, Patrick.

  3. It is impossible for them to achieve 60fps with that CPU, I believe 4k since VGA can reach that, but in the case of both you need pure power. Power that processor does not have unless they pressure game developers to use all 8 cores simultaneously (opener games hopefully use 4 cores wasting the 4 that remain)

  4. After jaguar AMD launched the Puma + architecture, with improvements not as tangible as the company claimed, I think this custom SoC is based on an evolution of Puma + and some variations that are supported by dedicated HW. On the other hand I doubt that those are the reasons (those exposed) why MS fell for this and not Ryzen that is already ready and the console is not yet launched and not to mention 100% compatibility, it is like saying that a office runs on a core i3 and not on an APU!
