Samsung PM983 NGSFF NVMe SSD 8TB and unprecedented power

Samsung has introduced new M.2 SSD drives with the new NGSFF memory in NVMe format and a total capacity of 8TB, something unprecedented.

The situation of NAND Flash memories is not the best and we see how the increase in cost of these memories due to the inability of manufacturers to produce to meet demand, is causing a rise in the price of RAM, SSDs and also cards graphics that use GDDR-type memories. If a while ago we echoed the development by Samsung of GDDR6 memories and we commented that they were developing a special SSD unit, now we have more information about these new storage units.

Samsung has developed a new NVM3 format SSD units that have a storage capacity of 8TB, something that represents a significant leap in the capacity of these units, which have been stagnant so far. The NVMe protocol what it offers is a higher speed with respect to SSD units and even more than HDD units. Samsung's PM983 drive with NGSFF NVMe SSD memories, with a total capacity of 8TB. These units are not intended for the general market, they are intended for 1U rack-type servers with dimensions of 30.5x110x4.38mm.

These units for the moment will be exclusive for servers and Data Centers, since they will make use of new memories that are apparently faster than conventional ones. These drives feature a slightly larger form factor than the 2280 M.2, which is typical. The combination of 64 drives of this type offers nothing less than a transfer rate of 0.5 petabytes of data per second, which is equivalent to 500GB / s through the PCIe 3.0 port. They will be presented in society at the next CES 2018 in Las Vegas and possibly the first technical data will be given.
